Welcome to the Buchanan County Recorder/Registrar Office Home Page! It is our goal to provide accurate information for the public regarding real estate, conservation, and vitalrecords.

Land and Records Management

The Recorder is responsible for recording deeds, contracts, mortgages, assignments,
releases, federal and state tax liens, affidavits, plats and surveys, section corner certificates,
military service records, easements, condemnations, trade names, leases, 28E and
drainage agreements, bills of sale, articles of incorporation, financing statements, and
numerous other documents.

Vital Records

The Recorder/Registrar issues marriage licenses, registers births, deaths, and marriages,
and certifies vital records.

Licenses, Registrations, and Applications

The Recorder's office issues boat, snowmobile, and ATV registrations, titles, and liens. The
Buchanan County Recorder's office also issues state hunting and fishing licenses, fur
harvester licenses, landowner/tenant and paid deer and turkey licenses and tags, habitat,
duck, and trout stamps, as well as federal duck stamps. Renewals for ATV's, Snow and ORV's can be done at any Electronic License System for Iowa (ELSI) locations.  New and Transfer Registration or Titles for ATV's and Snow and ORV's can only processed at a County Recorders Office

Passports

As passport agents, Recorder's offices assist in completing and mailing applications for
passports.
